The staffing ratios that actually matter

Most families never ask about staffing until something goes wrong. Michael evaluates every community against specific, non-negotiable standards — day and night.

Hands-on ADL (activities of daily living) staff only. Nurses, Medicine Techs, and Activity Directors do not count toward this ratio.

Fires, evacuations, medical emergencies, and trauma events happen at 2am. A community with 1 caregiver for 30 overnight residents cannot safely move those residents when something goes wrong. This isn't a staffing preference — it's a life-safety issue.

"If there's a fire at 2am, how many hands-on caregivers do you have on the floor getting residents out?"

A community that meets the standard will answer without hesitation. A community that hedges, changes the subject, or counts nurses and medication aides in their number — doesn't meet the standard. Michael asks this question at every community he evaluates.
